Legal Aid Ontario‘s decision to expand its staff of French-speaking family law lawyers and to create a dedicated French-language telephone line are positive initiatives that will improve access to justice for Francophones, says Brampton lawyer-linguist Suzanne Deliscar.

“It’s an acknowledgement of Legal Aid’s responsibility to ensure that French services are available to those who need to access the Legal Aid system in Ontario,” she tells AdvocateDaily.com. “It’s an interesting advancement and is one of a number of changes that have been coming through Legal Aid recently.”

As of Oct. 16, Legal Aid has hired three additional bilingual family lawyers who are available to provide up to 20 minutes of summary legal advice over the phone to its clients.
